A LED, or light emitting diode, is a semiconductor light source that produces light in a much more efficient manner then conventional lighting technologies such as the incandescent and fluorescent lighting.
Technically, a semiconducting chip is doped (intermixing impurities into a semiconductor of high purity levels to modulate electrical properties) to create what is called a p-n junction.
